Sunday, Dinesh Karthik’s half century helped Gujarat Lions to win over Kolkata Knight Riders in an IPL T20 cricket match in Eden Garden. The duo of Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum made 42 runs from 5.3 overs.
72 runs were needed from 60 balls when a dangerous-looking McCullum, having struck two sixes and one boundary in the previous over, fell to Chawla as KKR were attacking full force with their spin trio. But Karthik was unfazed and found himself in the zone starting off with three classy boundaries against Brad Hogg. First, he reverse swept Hogg to the third man, then guided with the spinner to long on and displayed a fine flick off the wrist for a third boundary.
Gujarat was on course after a 42-run opening partnership in 5.3 overs. McCullum then laid into Morkel, taking a four and couple off sixes. Dinesh Karthik’s blistering 29-ball 51 made the chase very comfortable. The ‘keeper-batsman started off with three consecutive fours against Brad Hogg and never looked back. It was one of his better IPL knocks. Finch, too, played a lovely little cameo, scoring 29 off 10. Aggression at one end allowed Raina to bide his time. The skipper made 14 off 18 before getting out to a short delivery from Russell. This five-wicket win with 12 balls to spare took Gujarat to the top of the table. But Raina’s form remains a concern.
